In both my roles as library technician and librarian, I have been able to build and refine my collection development skills. As a library technician, I purchased all new materials for the Center High School Library. This included creating a new graphic novel section within the library. As a librarian at the El Dorado County Library, I was in charge of purchasing Kids Non-Fiction, Kids Fiction, Teen Fiction, and Teen Non-Fiction for 3 library branches. As library branch supervisor, I keep up with what my community is interested in and request books to be added to my branch via our collection development librarian.
My skills within this area include researching potential material, balancing multiple budgets, and selecting materials that meet the needs of patrons. I do my own research on what books are popular and what is needed in the library. I also read The Horn Book Magazine, Booklist, School Library Journal, and other professional publications to stay current with library materials.
